Sentence Structure of "If... were to"
"were to" uses the "present" to emphasize that under certain circumstances, the described scenario is highly unlikely to happen or is impossible, or that an unthinkable outcome will take place. Not that this particular sentence structure is only applicable to if-clauses, can be used for first-, second-, or third-person sentences, and is not affected by singular or plural forms.
