Soup is delicious.
In the West, people have soup at the beginning of a meal.
In Asia, people often have soup at the end of the meal.
There are two kinds of soup.
Clear soup is light.
Clear soup may have meat, vegetables, noodles or rice in it.
Chicken noodle soup is very popular.
A thick soup may creamy.
Potato soup is thick and creamy.
Some people eat only soup for a meal.

pottage = thick soup (用蔬菜和肉煮製的)濃湯 (法文說法: potage)
puree 濃湯
和pottage不同的是,puree裡頭有很多的澱粉質,整碗湯濃得化不開,
而此湯之濃,是因為蔬菜豆類等食材,已先細磨成粉,然後才煮製成湯。
以玉米濃湯來說,就有cream soup和puree soup這兩種。個人覺得前者奶香很
重,後者則是喝完了肚子就飽了。
chowder 巧達湯,海鮮(雜燴)濃湯
巧達湯最大的特點是裡頭有海鮮,而且另外又加了很多東西:牛奶、蕃茄、洋蔥、及其他蔬菜等,常出現在義大利麵館或法式餐館的菜單上。
broth = clear soup 清湯
把蔬菜、魚、肉煮成湯後,將湯渣全部濾掉後的清湯。
剛譯完的推理小說Red Death裡,就曾出現 garlic broth大蒜清湯。
背景是主角的墨西哥朋友為了幫他的傷口消炎,所以就煮了garlic broth給他喝。
stock 很類似broth,只是stock不直接喝,是用來做湯底或醬汁的。
