Unbroken: path to redemption
The astonishing story of Louis Zamerini continues
The moving 2014 film Unbroken introduced audiences to the store of Louis Zamperini.
He experienced more in a few years than most people do in a lifetime.
The movie followed him as he became an exceptional long distance runner, appearing in the 1936 Berlin Olympics in the 5000 meter run.
He was the top finisher for the Americans.
The World War 2 interrupted his plans to compete again in the Olympics, which were cancelled due to the war.
Instead he enlisted in the Army Air Corps.
Our a routine mission, his plane crashed in the ocean, and he and two other crew members drifted for 47days, during which time one died.
The two survivors were rescued and then captured after they had drifted 2000 miles into Japanese controlled water.
They were put into a prison camp where one particular officer, nicknamed "the Bird," was determined to break Zamperinin's spirt with verbal and physical abuse.
But he endured , and his spirit remained unbroken.
He returned to the U.S. a hero.
The first movie closes with WW2 ending and Zamperinin reunitiing with his family.
