Okinawa
Clean water, good food and long life
Okinawa's clear waters, white beaches and nearby islands habitually attract tourists in the summertime.
But we found that this wonderful spot has something to offer year round!
Humpback whales make a yearly journey from far in the north where they feed, to warmer southern waters near Okinawa.
In early March, my wife and i went to the island of Zamami to see these gentle giants up close.
From the city of Naha, we took a high speed ferry to Zamami.
Almost immediately, we boarded a boat that took us on a two-hour whale-filled adventure.
If the open water isn't your thing, there is another option.
The Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium is one of the largest in the world.
What really sets it apart is its phenomenal success with raising whale sharks and giant manta rays in captivity.
And visitors should't miss Okinawa World.
It's not an ordinary theme park.
It features a large natural cave with an 850-meter trail that takes people on a magnificent tour of stalactites and stalagmites.
